GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD

Experiencing an extraordinary God in ordinary life

Issue #377 January 8, 2002

Stressed

I felt stressed, irritated and over-committed. Too many things on the go, too little time to do them in and I didn’t even know where to start on the pile.

To top it off my dog Genni was very insistently nagging to go for her walk, which like everything else should have been done earlier.

I gave in, and took her out. She was thrilled to finally be going. Genni romped and frolicked in the snow banks. She bounced from one scent post to another to see if any of her friends had visited lately.

I watched her enviously and said half-aloud "It’s not fair God. Look at all the joy, she doesn’t have a thing to worry about in the world."

The response was almost audible, "What have you got to complain about? You have a place to live, food to eat and a family that loves you. I provide for you, all you have to do is trust."

Ouch. Suddenly I didn’t feel so pressured. Knowing that He was in control and cared took me from being stressed to feeling joy. By the time I got home, I was humming praise songs and the piles of stuff didn’t seem nearly as large.

Then Jesus said to his disciples: "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?

"Consider how the lilies grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith! And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them. But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well. Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom" Luke 12:22-32 NIV

Until next time, turn the stresses and worries over to Him and rejoice in His provision and love.

God bless.

Kevin.
