GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD

Experiencing an extraordinary God in ordinary life

Issue #428 February 28, 2002

A Rough Morning

I awakened with a start this morning in the midst of a nightmare. I tried to go back to sleep, but the dog decided she needed to go out.

By the time she came in, I was too awake to go back to sleep, but I was grumpy. I sat down at my desk to study, pray and write Gleanings. I reached for a pen and knocked a big container of paper clips off the back of the desk onto the floor.

As they fell, one of them managed to find its way between the prongs of an electrical cord and blew the line. No computer, no stereo, nothing.

I checked the breaker and it was fine. I ended up going into the garage, or "the abyss of unwanted objects" as we have begun to call it, to find an extension cord. After much digging and muttering, I found one and brought it in.

I hooked it up in a different area of the basement, plugged my surge protector into it and started over. The surge protector had done its job and things worked. I still have an electrical problem to sort out, but that can wait.

As I sat here mumbling to myself what a lousy morning it had been, I asked God what I was supposed to write about. He answered "Peace."

I answered back with words to the effect of "Are you nuts God? Don’t you know what kind of a morning I’ve had? How can I write about peace?"

His reply "Am I not there even when you don’t feel my presence? Am I not the bringer of peace?"

I had to admit that God is God even when He feels distant to us. His promises never fail and His presence is always nearby.

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:4-7 NIV

I’m not quite at peace yet with my morning, but I’ve come a long way.

Until next time, whatever kind of day you are having, may you feel the peace that transcends all understanding.

To those who have been called, who are loved by God the Father and kept by Jesus Christ: Mercy, peace and love be yours in abundance

 Jude 1:1a-2 NIV

Are you in search of peace in your life? Email me and I’ll share some Bible verses that explain why a personal relationship with Jesus is so important and a prayer that will make it possible.

Or simply begin the relationship by saying a prayer along the lines of:

Dear God:

I have made many mistakes in my life and done things I am not proud of. I need your love and forgiveness. I believe that you came into this world and gave your life on a cross to pay for my sins and that you defeated death and rose again. Please forgive me, and be the Lord of my life. I give my life to you Lord.

Amen

If you pray this prayer let me know and I will direct you to some free non-denominational resources that will help you grow in that newfound relationship.
