GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD

Experiencing an extraordinary God in ordinary life

Issue #427 February 27, 2002

IGNITION

For years now, I’ve done all my barbequing on a propane barbeque. It wasn’t always that way; I used to cook over charcoal briquettes.

The briquettes would be carefully stacked and soaked in lighter fluid. I’d stand back and toss a match onto the pile.

When the match hit the fuel soaked briquettes, there would be a loud WHOOSH and a burst of flames. Once the flames hade died down and the briquettes were white hot, I’d spread them out and get ready to start cooking.

Even spreading the coals was a bit of an art form. Too close together and they were too hot. Too far apart and they cooled too quickly.

Our relationship with God can be like those briquettes soaked in fuel. A mere whisper from Him ignites our spirit.  We burst with joy at His presence. We rejoice at His teaching and discipline. We embrace His calling on our lives.

Yet like the briquettes, if we don’t spend time with Him and in fellowship with other Christians we can quickly become cool or even cold. The fire can go out. Or we can spend so much time with other Christians that we loose touch with non-believers and have no opportunity to help ignite them.

It’s a balancing act. Spending enough time in true fellowship to keep the fire hot, but not so much that we allow others to remain cold.

Let everything that has breath praise the LORD.

Praise the LORD. Psalm 150:6 NIV

Until next time, may the mere whisper of His name ignite your soul and may you in turn be used to ignite the flame for others.

Hallelu Yah

Kevin

If you’ve never been ignited by the presence of the Lord and don’t have a personal relationship with Him email me and I’ll share some Bible verses that explain why a personal relationship with Jesus is so important and a prayer that will make it possible.

Or simply begin the relationship by saying a prayer along the lines of:

Dear God:

I have made many mistakes in my life and done things I am not proud of. I need your love and forgiveness. I believe that you came into this world and gave your life on a cross to pay for my sins and that you defeated death and rose again. Please forgive me, and be the Lord of my life. I give my life to you Lord.

Amen

If you pray this prayer let me know and I will direct you to some free non-denominational resources that will help you grow in that newfound relationship.
