GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD

Experiencing an extraordinary God in ordinary life

Issue #421 February 21, 2002

Birches and willows and more, oh my!

As I walked the dog yesterday, I took a few moments to just enjoy the trees around the lake.

Here in Alberta, we have a weeping birch tree, similar to a weeping willow. All the other trees around it seemed to be reaching upward and outward as far as they could manage. The birch had a solid trunk, but its branches draped down to the ground in classic weeping tree style.

I was truck by the resemblance of the weeping tree to Jesus, but not in a physical sense. I didn’t see the face of Jesus in the tree, so you don’t have to worry about making a pilgrimage or seeing me on television. I saw it as a metaphor.

While all the other trees were reaching away, the birch reached down. Jesus, who has every reason to reach away from us, leans down to be near us and weeps over our sin.

He wants nothing more than to have that one on one, personal relationship with us. He strains from the heavens to get our attention and draw us near.

Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners--of whom I am the worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life. 1 Timothy 1:15-16 NIV

The realm of heaven will not be complete until all who will accept Him have done so. In the interim, every time you see a weeping birch, willow or other weeping tree, remember that He loves you enough to reach down from heaven to touch you.

Hallelu Yah

Kevin

Do you know this Jesus who cares so much for you? If not, email me and I’ll share a few Bible verses that explain why a relationship with Him is so important and a prayer that will make it possible.
