GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD

Experiencing an extraordinary God in ordinary life

Issue #420 February 20, 2002

Overflow

Here in this part of Alberta, Canada, we’ve had unseasonably warm weather this winter. Many days have been above freezing and there is little snow.

The snow has been melting and flowing out onto the lake, leaving distinctive flow patterns and unsafe patches on the ice. The more the snow melts, the larger the flow patterns become and the less stable the ice underneath becomes.

Even in areas where there is a solid base of ice, the overflow areas can be very dangerous.

The same thing can happen to Christians. We might have a foundation of sorts, but we let the overflow of life pile up on the foundation and weaken it.

We slip into old habits. We drift away from our relationship with God. We allow the things of the world to distract us from the things of eternity. We fill our minds with garbage television and reading. The layers gradually build up, leaving a very un-Christ-like appearance and weakening our witness.

God doesn’t call us to be perfect and He knows what it is like to be tested, but we are still called to walk a narrow path and keep Him in the forefront of our lives.

We’re called to focus on the things that please God.

Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2 NIV

Until next time, may you examine your life and eliminate the overflow that clouds your faith walk.
