GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD

Experiencing an extraordinary God in ordinary life

Get That Man

Years ago, when I was in boot camp, part of our physical training was a game called "Get That Man."

The rules were simple; the drill instructor picked someone at random, pointed them out and yelled, "Get that man." The other 120 guys would start to chase the person until they caught him and got him up in the air, and some one else would be it.

There are few things as adrenaline producing as 120 enthusiastic soldiers charging at you full force, with the sole goal of getting their hands on you. I don’t think I’ve ever run as hard or fast in my life before or since being "that man."

It doesn’t take very long before they catch up to you and lift you, not so gently, into the air. It’s a few seconds of heart pounding terror that seems like forever. You just run for all you’re worth, without looking back because that will slow you down, and hope to stay ahead.

Sometimes life is like that. It feels as if the whole world is on your tail and you’re running as fast as you can to stay ahead of some unseen enemy. You don’t want to look back or stop to reflect because it might catch up to you.

Ironically, the best cure is to stop, take some time with God and His Word and in prayer. That allows you the opportunity to focus on what’s really important and get recharged.

Your mind and the world tell you that you are too busy to do that. Yet some of the greats of the church through the years have made it clear to us that stopping for that time has been crucial to their faith walk.

Dr. Yonggi Cho, pastor of the world’s largest church in Seoul, Korea (over 750,000 members) spends six hour as day minimum in prayer. The Apostle John is reported to have earned the name camel-knees, because of all the time he spent in prayer.

In the midst of His busy ministry, Jesus made a point of regular quiet time and prayer.

Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone Matthew 14:22-23a NIV

One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God. Luke 6:12 NIV

Are you running like mad to keep the world at bay? Perhaps it is time to stop and spend time with the Lord.

Until next time, may your daily quiet time become both a reality and a blessing.

God bless.

Kevin
