GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Experiencing an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue #414 February 14, 2002 Significance I sat in the planetarium watching and listening as the overhead screen told us about the size of the universe. They started with the Earth, which is bigger than I will ever see all of, and began to move the camera backwards. The Earth became a large blue ball then a smaller blue ball as the camera retreated further still, to an almost imperceptible ball as they showed our solar system. The solar system we live in faded into insignificance as they showed the Milky Way galaxy, which in turn became nothing more than a tiny spot amongst many galaxies. The size of it all was overwhelming and incomprehensible. Here I am, one person among billions, in the midst of a universe that stretches so far I can never comprehend it. It was enough to make me realize how insignificant my little life is. The Psalmist understood that feeling as he wrote: What is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? Psalm 8:4 NIV Insignificant in some ways, yet totally significant for eternity. So valued that God lowered Himself to be like us The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14 NIV He came out of love for you, and He came out of love for me. Never let anyone tell you that you have no value. The creator of the Universe knows you personally and cares for you. By the same yardstick, never look at another as if they have no value, for He knows them and loves them as well.
