GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Experiencing an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue #411 February 11, 2002 Strong Winds I got up this morning to the sound of a strong wind. Through our bedroom window I could see the shadows of the trees being whipped violently back and forth. I have seen the wind churn a peaceful ocean into a terrifying monster that threatened to devour everything in its wake. I have seen the wind lift a full sheet of plywood into the air and drive it through the wall of a building. I have seen the devastation brought by tornados and watched via television the destruction wrought by hurricanes. Yet, the wind is more than a destructive giant, it is also a gentle, cooling breeze. It is the windswept look of a loved ones hair. It is the gentle nodding of a leaf. Sometimes we expect God to move in awesome ways to speak to us. We look for Him to show himself with all the force of a hurricane. We can be so busy looking for the God of hurricanes that we miss Him as He gently caresses our face. The LORD said, "Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by." Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. 1 Kings 19:11-13a NIV Are you waiting for God to speak to you? Maybe its time to stop chasing the tornado and sit quietly and look for the gentle breeze. Until next time, may you make the time to just sit and listen for His voice.
Hallelu Yah
Kevin Do you wonder if there even is a God? The longing for Him is not "proof" that He exists, but like hunger is a strong indicator of the evidence of food, your wondering is a strong indicator that He exists. Pick up a Bible and read the Gospel of John (its the fourth book of the New Testament) and just ask God to reveal Himself to you. Then listen for His still small voice telling you He is there. Once you have heard Him, email me. Ill share a few Bible verses that explain why a relationship with Him is important and a prayer that will make that relationship possible. He sits all around you and has been waiting for you to find Him since before the beginning of time.
