GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Experiencing an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue #403 February 3, 2002 Naval Gazing As I sliced the big naval orange, I marvelled at the way it was constructed. I began naval gazing. A thick outer skin to protect the juicy, flavourful fruit inside. The inside was split into segments, which made for easy separating and eating. No seeds to pick out. All in all quite amazing. Then I stopped to think. The orange really resembled the life of many believers. A thick skin to hide and protect the lovely, vulnerable person inside. A life separated into segments, carefully planned so that their faith is one component of their life and doesnt intrude on the rest. No seeds so no new fruit is produced. Its a shame, because the love and joy of Christ are meant to be shared so that others can experience Him. When we hide it and segment it, others cant see it. When its hidden and segmented, we cant truly enjoy the fullness of His love, forgiveness, power and grace. When we segment our faith and hide it under our tough skins, how can Jesus be Lord of our life? To be Lord means we belong to Him in whole, not some thin hidden segment. I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith." Romans 1:16-17 NIV Do you segment your life because you are secretly ashamed of the One who gave His life for you? If so ask for His forgiveness and help. He is faithful. Until next time, through the power of Holy Spirit may you begin to un-separate your life and take off that thick skin.
