GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD

Experiencing an extraordinary God in ordinary life

Issue #402 February 2, 2002

I’ll Never Live Through This

Something I read this morning reminded me of the intensity of feelings that accompany being a teenager.

Teens struggle to find their own identity, and in doing so many rebel in dress or action against their parents or other adult influences. This rebellion can drive a wedge between them and the very people they still need for support and understanding (although they would be loath to admit they needed help or understanding).

They wonder what there purpose in life is. They wonder if their lives even have purpose or meaning.

The pain of the smallest rejection, or of a broken heart can feel devastating. More than once I was sure I would die of embarrassment or die from a broken heart. I just "knew" that I’d never live through this.

As we grow older, we recognize that while the pain was intense, much of what we went through was simply preparing us for what was to come in life ahead. The pain fades (for the most part) and we learn that we can survive and even thrive through things that we thought we never thought we would make it through.

In some ways, I think we’re all God’s teens. We rebel because we want to be independent (although we secretly know we need His help). We’re convinced that the pain of life is too much to endure at times. We wonder where we fit into the grand scheme of things and if we have any use in His service.

Yet, He never turns His back on us. He’s there is we simply call out to Him.

Sometimes we go through trials because they are the consequences of our own decisions. Some times it is because of the attack of Satan and other times, it is God stretching us and growing us for bigger and better things.

Whatever we’re going through, He is with us and we know we can rest in His presence and in the promise of things to come. In the light of eternity all the pain will quickly fade to insignificance.

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away." Revelation 21:1-4 NIV

Until next time, remember that He will bring you through and the pain will fade. Lean on Him and in the eternity to come the joy will exceed anything you ever imagined.

God bless.

Kevin
