GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD

Experiencing an extraordinary God in ordinary life

Issue # 362 December 24, 2001

Simple things

I’ve been told I’m easy to keep amused. Some people say it’s because the old saw "small things amuse small minds" has some truth. Personally, I like to think I’ve retained my child-like sense of wonder.

Seeing a deer on the side of the road; wondering why a duck still hangs around after winter has come; rooting around at a garage sale; checking out a book stores, these are the kinds of things can keep me amused for long periods of time.

I also like small surprises. An unexpected note from a friend or finding a loonie (that’s a dollar coin for those of you who don’t live in Canada and a twonie is a two dollar coin) in my pocket that I didn’t know I had will delight me.

Sometimes we rush through life and miss the simple joys and blessings that God has prepared for us. Not all the blessings are huge, obvious, miraculous signs. Sometimes they are just simple things to delight our hearts.

It happens when we spend time in the Word as well. Sometimes we get so used to a passage that we don’t really stop to reflect on what it means, and we miss the joy.

Chances are that you have heard or will hear this verse during the past month, or at a Christmas Eve service today:

But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Luke 2:10 NIV

A simple verse that we’re familiar with, but think of what it means. The news is for all people, for anyone who will hear, for me and for you. It’s not exclusive to a few.

If we continue reading Luke’s gospel we realize that the news is the arrival of Jesus, and that Jesus came to free everyone who would accept Him from their sin and give them eternal life with Him.

It’s more than good news; it’s great, exciting news; something to tell everyone.

Don’t miss the simple joy of Jesus in the rush of Christmas.

Until next time, may the simple fact of His love for you bring you great joy.

God bless.

Kevin
