GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Experiencing an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue #357 December 19, 2001 Spurs The scene was melodramatic. High noon and the townspeople scattered as the two gunfighters strode out, spurs jangling, to meet their destiny in the middle of the street. Okay, enough of the melodrama. I simply wanted an opportunity to talk about spurs. I suppose I could have talked about the San Antonia Spurs, but I dont know anything about basketball. Heres some spur trivia: 1) Spurs have been used since at least the fourth century BC 2) Medieval knights often wore simple spurs when jousting 3) The round wheelie bits of the spurs, that made all the noise when our gunfighters walked out to face each other, are called rowels. 4) The rowels attach to the long part of the spur called the neck. 5) The spurs attach to the boots with straps made of leather. What in the world do spurs have to do with the Bible? Im getting there. Spurs are used to nudge the side of your horse and provoke it into moving faster. Properly used spurs dont do any harm to the horse; they just give it that extra, needed nudge. Sometimes, Christians need that nudge as well Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Hebrews 10:23-24 NIV The KJV uses provoke instead of spur, but in todays culture the word provoke tends to carry a lot of negative baggage. Were called to spur, provoke, nudge and encourage each other on to the works that accompany our faith. These works have nothing to do with our salvation, that is a gift from God. The works and deeds should flow out of our desire to serve and love the world as He loved and served us. Until next time, consider yourself spurred. Take that love you have for Jesus and apply it to someone in a practical way today. God bless. Kevin Jesus loves you unconditionally and wants to forgive you and give you eternal life, no matter what your background is. You dont earn your way it is a gift.
