GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Experiencing an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue # 354 December 16, 2001 AND THE HEAVENS WERE SILENT Sometimes we pray and the heavens seem silent. We pray for the life of a friend or family member to be saved and God takes them home despite our prayers. We pray for something in our own lives or the lives of others that we think is Gods will and it doesnt happen. God seems far away and we dont understand, it doesnt seem fair. We go through all the "If onlys." We wonder if we didnt pray hard enough, or have enough faith. We wonder if there is some sin in our life that is so bad that he is punishing us. We fell abandoned, betrayed. We feel as if we prayed and the heavens were silent. In those times, we need to remember that He too knows what it is like. He sent His son to earth, to bear suffering far beyond what the son deserved. Yet we also know that He sees the entire picture and knows what is best. Sometimes we wont understand the answer this side of heaven but our God is faithful, just and merciful. He knows what is best, even when it seems contrary to what we know and want. The works of his hands are faithful and just; all his precepts are trustworthy. They are steadfast for ever and ever, done in faithfulness and uprightness. Psalm 111:7-8 NIV The Lord our God is merciful and forgiving, even though we have rebelled against him Daniel 9:9 NIV The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. Psalm 103:8 NIV If you are there deep in that hurting place, and the heavens seem silent, know that He has not abandoned you. He is in the room with you, He grieves with you and He loves you. I dont have the wisdom to tell you why all things happen. I do know that the character of God prohibits Him from doing anything that is less than the best for those who love Him, even when it doesnt seem that way for us. Until next time, if the heavens seem silent, do not despair, He hears, He grieves and He is at work in ways that will eventually be revealed. God bless.
