GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Experiencing an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue #352 December 14, 2001 Kevins Big Adventure
I have a confession to make &ldots; Im far from perfect and I sometimes encounter situations that stretch my comfort zone or make me down-right nervous (thats not the confession, you already knew that, its simply a lead in). I had one of those situations earlier this week. I had an ophthalmologist appointment, but that wasnt what made me nervous. I had to take the bus because my wife was busy and I wouldnt be able to drive safely afterwards. The thought of taking the bus terrified me. Im used to being in control and driving. I grew up mostly in small towns where you walked everywhere or drove. Busses just werent available. Ive flown, sailed, taken the train and taken long bus trips, but there was something different about ordinary city transit. The thought of catching the right bus, getting the right fare and transferring between our local bus line and that of the city adjacent to us scared me. What if I missed the bus? What if I was at the wrong stop or got on the wrong bus? What if..? I know its silly for a grown man to be afraid of the bus, but in all honesty, I felt much less fear the first time I crawled out onto the wing of an airplane at 5000 feet for my first skydiving experience. Now to you, taking the bus may well be routine and you never thought much about it at all. Yet I suspect that there is some area in your life that wouldnt bother me at all but terrifies you. For example, speaking in front of large groups doesnt bother me, but it terrifies some people. Whatever it is that causes us to be stretched, there is a place we can turn for comfort. One of my favourite Bible verses is Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the LORD, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior Isaiah 43:1b-3a NIV Whatever your secret fears, trust Him and He will guide you through it. Until next time, may you feel the comfort of His presence at all times. God bless Kevin Do you know this God who will guide and protect you through all things? If not, email me and Ill share a few Bible verses that will explain why its important to have a relationship with Jesus and a prayer that will make it possible.
