GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Experiencing an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue# 341 December 3, 2001 Broken Heart
For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me." In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me." For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 NIV Communion is a highly personal thing. Different congregations celebrate it in different ways. Various denominations have differing theologies as to what (if anything) happens to the elements (bread/ wine (or juice). The primary focus of taking communion for most is a remembrance of the sacrifice that Jesus made for us with His life at Calvary. Last night my wife and I had communion at a church we visited. Were firm believers that Christians should have a home church, but periodically visit others to see what is happening elsewhere in the body of Christ. The "bread" for this service was broken crackers. Nothing wrong with that, just not what Im used to. As I ate the bread, the cracker broke and crumbled in my mouth and then softened. It was a fitting metaphor for the sacrifice of Jesus and what He has done in my life. He took a heart that was as hard as stone and broke it. Then He softened it to make it more like His own. For me it was the most meaningful communion in a while. Until next time, when you take the elements of communion, dont do it mechanically. Pause and reflect what it really means for you. God bless.
