GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Encountering an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue # 237 August 22, 2001 Houses and Heaven
With all this business of buying and selling our home, home and houses have been on my mind a lot lately. By the way, we have a conditional offer on our house, praise God. For the past two months or so, every time Ive seen a For Sale sign on a piece of property, Ive taken a quick look at the outside of the home, to see what was out there and how our home compared. There were big estate homes and tiny starter homes. Some were immaculately maintained, others in dire need of work. The yards ranged from mostly gravel and concrete to elaborately designed formal gardens. No two were quite the same. I wondered about our heavenly home and what it would look like. Paul tried to describe his vision of heaven in the book of the Revelation, but its hard for me to draw a picture from his description. The world has the image of heaven being a place we become angels, sit on clouds and play harps. Im not sure where that image comes from, because angels and people are not the same thing and Scripture doesnt teach that we become angels (but thats a discussion for another day). Not only that, but Im not musically inclined, I cant image eternity playing an instrument. Jesus says: "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God ; trust also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going. John 14:1-4 NIV That doesnt help me picture it, but if God Himself has prepared a place there for me, I m certain it will be wonderful. I look forward to seeing what it will be like. Whatever I imagine, Im sure God has something greater in mind. He is always amazing me with the way He does things. They are always done differently than I expected and always done in a better way. Im sure our heavenly home is no different. Will there be fishing in Heaven? Are there animals in Heaven? Does Heaven have a library? I dont know. I do know that He will be there and thats enough to sustain me. Until next time, when you find that you are in a tough spot, may His presence and the knowledge that something better will come help you through. God bless. Kevin Not sure if youre going to heaven when you die? There is a way to know for sure. A personal relationship with Jesus Christ is your guaranteed reservation for Heaven. Email me and Ill share a few Bible verses that explain the need for a personal relationship with Christ and a prayer that will make that relationship possible. © 2001 K.F.
