GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD

Encountering an extraordinary God in ordinary life

Issue # 235 August 20, 2001

SECRET WEAPONS

Hundreds of billions of dollars, and more, have been invested by governments the world over, to develop new and powerful weapons of war and destruction. Many more billions of dollars have been spent trying to keep those same weapons secret or uncover the secrets of other countries.

All that time, money and energy invested seems such a waste when the most powerful weapon is no secret. It’s no secret, but it is highly under-utilized. I’m speaking about prayer of course.

Somewhere along the line in the church, prayer seems to have been delegated to “little old ladies” who are prayer warriors, or those who aren’t able to “do” anything else.

We’ve lost focus on the fact that everything we do should be bathed in prayer. Prayer is not something we do as an add on, it is a vital component, perhaps the most critical component.

One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God                     Luke 6:12 NIV

About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray                                                                          Luke 9:28 NIV

Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, "Sit here while I go over there and pray."                                              Matthew 26:26 NIV

After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone                                                     Matthew 14:23 NIV

These verses are just a taste of how frequently Jesus prayed. Our Lord Himself spent a great deal of time in prayer. As the Son of God, if He felt the need for the power of prayer, how much more do we need it?

It’s time for the church to roll out it’s big guns in the spiritual war. Turning to God in prayer, combined with repentance, is a weapon the enemy has no defense against.

How’s your prayer life?

Until next time, may you grab a hold of prayer and use it generously.

God bless.

Kevin
