GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Encountering an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue # 225 August 10, 2001 How Big?   I started thinking (often a dangerous thing for me to do) this morning about how big God is. I read recently that this planet orbits the sun at 67,000 miles an hour. Our galaxy moves at 1.3 million miles an hour. I’m sure I have read those numbers before, but this time they really struck me. I can’t comprehend those speeds, let alone some place big enough to achieve those speeds. A really long days drive for me is 1,000 km (650 miles more or less). It would take me more than 100 days of exhausting driving to travel as far as our planet does in an hour. It would take more than 5,000 years for me to drive the distance our galaxy moves in an hour. All of it was simply spoken into place by God.   And God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years, and let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth." And it was so. God made two great lights--the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. God set them in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth, to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning--the fourth day.                                                                             Genesis 1:14-19 NIV It’s enough to make a person feel small and insignificant. Almost worthless in the giant scheme of things. But, we know from Scripture that the God who created all of this, loves us and knows every detail of our lives. We also know that we are created in His image.  It all boggles the mind in some ways. It also means that we need to change our way of thinking. All those people we don’t like, God created them and loves them. The “invisible” people we walk past every day, they were created in His image. The person on the other side of the world who is suffering, but we can ignore because it doesn’t impact them, God knows their pain. The thousands who perish daily without ever having heard the gospel. God’s heart aches for them. None of them are worthless. All of them are worth more than we can ever imagine to God. If that’s true, what are you going to do differently? Until next time, may you gain a sense of the worth of every person on this planet, including yourself in God’s eyes. God bless.
