GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Encountering an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue # 220 August 05, 2001 Crazed Geese
Yesterday, I had an hour or two to kill as Realtors dragged clients through our house. It was a hot Saturday afternoon, and I had a shady picnic table by a lake. I sat, enjoying the quiet and reading my Bible. In between Bible passages, I watched the people go by and I watched the ducks, geese, gulls and cormorants that filled the area. In truth, I wasnt really deeply engrossed in my study. After a while, two separate flocks of geese caught my attention. The flocks were about the same size and seemed comprised of about the same number of mature and not quite fully grown geese. Their behaviours were quite different and distinctive. One flock sat quietly along the shore line resting, under the watchful eye of a big gander. Every now and then they would slowly walk down to the lake for a cooling dip, then come back up on shore. They were a picture of peace and contentment. The other flock was eccentric, almost crazed in their behaviour. They spent all their time madly dashing hither and yon (Ive always wanted to find a way to say hither and yon in my writing). They frantically splashed across the lake and back, honking loudly. They chased one another and had little territorial spats. The slightest distraction, anywhere in the area, sent them into another frenzy of activity. Total chaos and anarchy. They couldnt seem to find peace or settle anywhere. Nothing seemed to bring them contentment. It reminded me of my life before and since Christ. Before becoming a Christian, I madly dashed off in chasing the newest scheme to be the biggest, fastest, most productive, richest whatever. I was never content and didnt know what peace was. Any distraction was likely to send me into panic, flapping off and honking madly as I went. Now life is more orderly, more content. Its not a boring or stuffy life, like I imagined Christians must have. I still have a blast. I have a sense of purpose and I know who I am in Christ. I have joy, peace and hope. I still have those moments of mad flapping and honking, but far less often than before. Im under the watchful eye of the true shepherd. Im learning, slowly that the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness. James 3:17-18 NIV How about you? Are you running about flapping and honking like a slightly crazed goose or are you finding contentment in trusting God? Until next time, may you find peace and joy in abundance. God bless. Kevin Looking for peace, joy and contentment, but dont know where to find it? Look to Jesus. Email me and Ill share a few Bible verses that explain why a relationship with Him is important and a prayer that will make it possible.
