GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD

Encountering an extraordinary God in ordinary life

Issue # 218 August 03, 2001

WHY ME GOD?

Sometimes in life we go through tough periods. We suffer losses, have ill health and pass from crisis to crisis.

It just doesn’t seem to be fair. We work through all the obvious sin in our lives, we pray for healing, we try to discern what it is God wants us to know and it’s all to no avail.

We cry out and complain “Why me God?” and don’t hear an answer.

Something that is difficult for us to understand in our “Me first” society is that it may have absolutely nothing to do with us. We are the vessel that God is using, but the impact could be on a friend, a neighbour or on someone we will never meet this side of heaven.

Our experiences may be used to draw someone else close to God. They are watching or will hear of how we handle our struggles.

As hard as it is for us to understand, God is sovereign, and we can be used by Him in any way that will bring Him greater glory and turn more people to Him. When that happens, instead of crying “why me”, we should be thanking Him for the privilege of using us.

As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?"

"Neither this man nor his parents sinned," said Jesus, "but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life. As long as it is day, we must do the work of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the light of the world."                                                                         John 9:1-5 NIV

Even in the midst of our suffering, He is there and we can rejoice in His presence.;

Be joyful always;  pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.                                                                           I Thessalonians 5:16-18 NIV

When we are struggling in life, start by getting right with God. Seek Him in prayer, look for Godly counsel and seek what you should be learning. If the struggle doesn’t pass, look for the contentment of God’s presence and give thanks, knowing that He will use it in some way.

Until next time, may you give thanks to God in all circumstances.

God bless.

Kevin
