GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD

Encountering an extraordinary God in ordinary life

Issue # 217 August 02, 2001

POPCORN

One of my favorite snack foods is popcorn.

It can be dripping with butter and covered in salt, or served plain. It can be covered with caramel and peanuts and rolled into balls. It can be eaten hot off the stove (or microwave) or cold from the bowl the next morning.

Movies, even at home, aren’t the same without a bowl of popcorn and a soft drink.

It’s really an amazing product. A dried kernel of corn with just the right amount of moisture to pop open and make a fluffy snack when you heat it.

A little heat and pressure and it goes from dry, hard and unappealing to enjoyable.

Sort of like our hearts before Christ. Dry and hardened. Circumstances, often pressure or stress of some kind, draw us to Christ, and our heart softens and bursts open.

Like the Grinch at Christmas, our hearts grew ten sizes that day.

If we’re not careful though, like popcorn that  has been left to long, we can become stale and unappealing.

We need to be walking closely with God and spending time in His Word all the time to keep our hearts soft. Fortunately, even if we have drifted from Him and become hard and stale, if we turn back, He forgives us and refreshes us.

David knew what is was like to walk with God and   spend time in His Word.

I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands.

I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.

Praise be to you, O LORD; teach me your decrees.

With my lips I recount all the laws that come from your mouth.

I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches.

I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways.

I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word.

Psalm 119:10-16

I haven’t included all of Psalm 119 here because of the size of the Psalm, but it is worth a read in it’s entirety today if you have time.

Until next time, may you walk closely with God and may your heart burst with joy.

God bless.

Kevin

If you heart is hard and your life joyless, perhaps it is time to turn to Jesus. Email me and I’ll share a few Bible verses that will explain why a relationship with Christ is important and a prayer that will make it possible.

Don’t wait, let Him soften your heart today.
