GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Experiencing an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue # 781 April 14, 2003 Thanks For The Memories Many of you asked the name of the film we showed for our youth outreach event. It is called the "Story of Jesus For Children" and is put out by Campus Crusade For Christ. It and the original Jesus Film are available through Campus Crusade For Christ. Both videos are also widely available through Christian bookstores. If you've been reading Gleanings From The Word for any length of time, you know that I have a passion for Christian books. I hate to see old Christian books be destroyed so I started collecting them. I also collect old sermon booklets, tracts and more. If you ever come across Christian books that you want to give away, drop me an email. I was looking through a stack of old sermon booklets this morning and came across one entitled "Balm of Gilead" by Dr. F.W. Boreham. I didn't read the whole message, but the opening line was profound "Memory is the soul's best minister." I don't know if the expression originated with Him or not, but it hit home. When we go to step out in faith, it is a great confidence builder to remember all the times God proved faithful. Many people keep a prayer journal and record the answers to prayer in it. That way when they are struggling, they can go back and be reminded from their own experience how faithful our Lord is. God certainly understood that we would need reminding. Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them. Deuteronomy 4:9 NIV Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the LORD your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Deuteronomy 5:15a NIV do not be afraid of them; remember well what the LORD your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt. Deuteronomy 7:18 NIV Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice. Look to the LORD and his strength; seek his face always. Remember the wonders he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced, 1 Chronicles 16:10-12 NIV David remembered God's faithfulness. On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night. Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings. My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me. Psalm 63:6-8 NIV Praise the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits-- who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's. Psalm 103:2-5 NIV When you're struggling about trusting God (and we all do at times) remember what He has done. Look to His Word and see His faithfulness. Look to your own memories and recall all the times He has come through for you in the past. The memory of His faithfulness truly is a great minister. Until next time, give thanks for the memories of His faithfulness, grace and love, then step out in faith boldly. Be blessed. Hallelu Yah (Praise God)! Kevin YOU ARE Once you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour you know your sins are forgiven. Praise the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits--who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, Psalm 103:2-3 NIV Never let the enemy tell you that you are worthless or insignificant. You have value in the eyes of God so great that it was worth dying for. You are a blessing to the world. You can simply begin the relationship by honestly and completely opening your heart, admitting you need God's help, and saying a prayer along the lines of: Jesus: I have made many mistakes in my life and done things I am not proud of. I have sinned. I need your love and forgiveness. I believe that you came into this world and gave your life on a cross to pay for my sins and that you defeated death and rose again. Please forgive me, and be the Lord of my life. I give my life to you Lord. Amen If you pray this prayer for the first time let me know so I can rejoice with you.
