GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Experiencing an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue #460 April 11, 2002 Change of Perspective Im always amazed to find the number of things I do strictly out of habit. The fruit and vegetables for my juicer need to be cut to fit. I hadnt realized that I always cut the apples in one direction until yesterday. Yesterday, I cut the apple up horizontally instead of vertically. I realized the difference, because as I cut the apple, star shapes began to appear where the seeds were. I knew that if you cut apples that way, you got stars, but it had been so long that I had forgotten. It got me thinking about how many things we do out of habit. The little courtesies and kindnesses we leave left undone simply because we dont think about them. The habit we sometime have of griping instead of praying, because were used to it. Going to church out of habit, not really expecting God to appear. Our grace at mealtimes, when we remember to offer thanks has become mechanical. Our circle of friends has become small and probably encompasses only other Christians. Life has become more of a ditch than a rut. We miss out on the wondrous workings of God because were so used to them we dont see them anymore. My son, give me your heart and let your eyes keep to my ways, Proverbs 23:26 NIV Perhaps its time to alter your routine. To cut the apple the other way. To drive to work by a different route, or have something different for breakfast. To call an old friend or drop a "just thinking of you" card in the mail. To say hello to someone new on the bus. To spend ten minutes actually talking to your spouse or kids. Just enough of a shift so you see things with fresh eyes. Until next time, may your eyes be opened to the wonder of Gods presence around you and the call to service He has placed on your life. Hallelu Yah Kevin Stuck in a lonely, hurting or dark place? Change your perspective and look towards the source of hope, a personal relationship with Jesus. Email me and Ill share some Bible verses that explain why a personal relationship with Jesus is so important and a prayer that will make it possible. Or simply begin the relationship by saying a prayer along the lines of: Dear God: I have made many mistakes in my life and done things I am not proud of. I need your love and forgiveness. I believe that you came into this world and gave your life on a cross to pay for my sins and that you defeated death and rose again. Please forgive me, and be the Lord of my life. I give my life to you Lord. Amen If you pray this prayer let me know and I will direct you to some free non-denominational resources that will help you grow in that newfound relationship.
