GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD

Experiencing an extraordinary God in ordinary life

Issue # 450 April 1, 2002

Abundance

On the way to Easter morning service yesterday, the parking lot of every church I passed seemed full. Part of my heart leapt for joy to see so many people at worship. Part of my heart ached because so many of those vehicles will not be there next Sunday.

For so many, Christ is way down the list on their priorities. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m thrilled to see people who come out just for the playoff services (Christmas and Easter) and you can be a Christian and not go to church. It’s just that I know that they are missing so much in their walk with Christ.

The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.  John 10:10 KJV

They are not living the abundant life that is available to them through their relationship with Christ. That makes me sad. The same with people who come to worship week after week but it’s only a ritual. I just want to grab them, give them a shake, and yell "Wake up! Don’t you get what Jesus is offering you? It’s far better than the stuff you spend the rest of your week doing!"

Yet I know if I did that, it would do more harm than good. They need to open themselves up to the patient nudging of Holy Spirit and be convicted themselves.

If they ask I can tell them about the joy and peace Jesus has brought into my life. I can talk about it from the pulpit when I preach, I can write about it here. Otherwise I have to wait for the opportunity.

Since you’re reading this I can ask you though. Are you living the abundant life Jesus promised? I don’t mean material abundance, but the abundant life that comes from living in a close relationship with God. Do you have peace, joy, and contentment regardless of circumstances? Do you have a deep desire to spend time with Him, to do His will and to tell others about Him?

It takes opening your heart and spending time with Him. Reading His Word, talking with Him in prayer. Listening for that still small voice that He speaks in.

Will you do it? Will you open yourself to the great joy and peace that He offers or will you be content with just a tiny taste?

Until next time, I pray that you open yourself up fully to a wondrous move of God in your life.

Hallelu Yah

Kevin

If you have never opened your heart to Jesus, that’s the place you need to start to begin to experience what He has in store for you.

Email me and I’ll share some Bible verses that explain why a personal relationship with Jesus is so important and a prayer that will make it possible.

Or simply begin the relationship by saying a prayer along the lines of:

Dear God:

I have made many mistakes in my life and done things I am not proud of. I need your love and forgiveness. I believe that you came into this world and gave your life on a cross to pay for my sins and that you defeated death and rose again. Please forgive me, and be the Lord of my life. I give my life to you Lord.

Amen

If you pray this prayer let me know and I will direct you to some free non-denominational resources that will help you grow in that newfound relationship.
