GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD

Experience an extraordinary God in ordinary life

Issue #1,167 September 1,2004 Winter's Coming

Genni the wonder dog and I took our usual stroll around the lake. It was coming on dark and there wasn't anyone else out. I noticed a very young muskrat out for a swim. In fact before the night was over I would see seven 'rats, three of them young ones. I wondered how many of the young will survive the coming winter.

We saw two families of mallards with very young ducklings. I don't know if they were young hens from this year having their first set of young, or older hens having their second. I wondered if the babies would grow large enough to be able to make the trip south for the winter. It seemed doubtful.

We saw old broken wing the goose. He has two deformed or broken wings and is unable to fly. I don't know if he was born that way, or if he had an accident learning to fly. He can swim with no problem, but getting airborne is beyond his abilities. Unless fish and wildlife find him a new home, like they did for Isaac the one-legged goose last year, he will not make it through until spring. There's another goose that seems unable to fly as well, but I have never been close enough to see why. Like old broken wing the future looks bleak for him as well.

Death is a part of life. The moment we're born, we being the process of dying. Theologians have debated what will happen to animals when they die and I can't give a definitive answer, but I do know what happens to people.

Death for people isn't final. It's simply the transition into the next phase of life, much like the moment of birth is a transition into this world.

Jesus defeated death.

I declare to you, brothers, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed -- in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: "Death has been swallowed up in victory." "Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?" The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
1 Corinthians 15:50-57 NIV

Believers have no reason to fear death, because we know that it's followed by eternity with Father. Non-believers have much to fear as death means eternity separated from Him.

Until next time, rejoice if you know Jesus. The life that follows this one will be sweeter than anything we can ever imagine.

Hallelu Yah (Praise God)

Be blessed

Kevin

Never let the enemy tell you that you are worthless or insignificant. You have value in the eyes of God so great that it was worth dying for. You are a blessing to the world. You are so precious to God that heaven will not be complete without you.

HELP FOR THE HURTING

One of the hurts in the world comes from the fear of dying. People wonder what will happen to them then. Even non-believers have some sense that something comes after this life. Many people live in fear and emotional/spiritual pain because they know there lives have been far less than perfect and they don't want to face the judgement of God.

There is a way for you to face the judgement with confidence and be secure in your knowledge of what will happen after you die. By accepting Jesus Christ as Saviour, your sins are all forgiven and you have a guaranteed gate pass to heaven.

He knows all about your mistakes and will not reject you if you come to Him earnestly seeking. He's not waiting for you to "get it all together", because He knows we can't. He'll take you where you are. There is no one who is beyond the reach of God's loving arms. All you have to do is turn and jump into them. Will you?

If you want to know how to do that simply email us and we'll send you some Bible verses that will explain it to you.

You can simply begin the relationship by honestly and completely opening your heart; admitting you need God's help; turning away from your sin and saying a prayer along the lines of the one below. There isn't any "magic" in the prayer; it's simply a way to open up to the gift that Jesus already bought for you with His very life. You can't earn it. You don't deserve it. He freely offers it to all who will accept it.

Jesus:

I have made many mistakes in my life and done things I am not proud of. I have sinned. I need your love and forgiveness. I believe that you came into this world and gave your life on a cross to pay for my sins and that you defeated death and rose again. Please forgive me, and be the Lord of my life. I give my life to you Lord.

Amen

If you pray this prayer for the first time let me know so I can rejoice with you. It's not the end of the process. It is the beginning of a wonderful journey to become more like Jesus. It's your starting point.
